Diapsalmata

Hi there,

This blog hosts the progress I make toward various personal projects - the details are here. I find these are a good way to learn new things whilst still following your own path and having fun. I remember reading somewhere a long blog post about the concept of "forever projects" (if I recall the term used correctly) and I think the plan here is broadly in line with that.

Initially I had planned two projects:

The first was to look into combining tools from procedural generation with real world spatial data to create map-based imaginaries - with a focus on water and urban resilience.

The second aimed to build a data explorer of sorts for botanical information in the Cape Floral Kingdom. I'm foremost interested in combining data from a variety of sources to create wiki-type pages for different species, but there are some spin-off ideas that I am mullling over.

These intial seeds have grown and as time has gone by the number has expanded, with the different pieces of work at all kinds of different stages of development. You will see that the themes are broadly similar as these reflect my main personal interests, which can be filed under climate, water, botany, and the role of humans in all these.

Either way, the overarching goal here is that I would like to learn some new things - particularly in terms of GIS/spatial data processing and modelling. I think learning things works best when you have a clear project and goal to work towards. If somebody other than me can benefit from the things I am learning, then that is the kind of bonus the internet was made for :)

From time to time I may add other bits and pieces...

Take care,

DW
