Introduction

This site hosts some of my personal project work - in doing so I adopted a relatively relaxed presentation and reporting style. The climatic analysis I conducted here comes closest to a more rigorous reporting style.

Unfortunately, much of the other work I would have liked to be able to show in a portfolio format cannot be shared either for confidentiality reasons or so as not to prejudice the publication of my thesis results.

The following are thus "vignettes" that I can reasonably share from my professional, academic, and personal projects, with some elaboration for context.

Not all of these are what would have been the final version of each figure but I hope that these nevertheless give some indication of the kind of work I like to do - in all cases I have been primarily responsbile for these outputs in terms of research, data analysis, and presentation.

Distribution of mine sites for which data was gathered in the course of my PhD study. Mine sites categorised by mining method.

Distribution of study sites - method

Mine sites showing reported and imputed water withdrawal.

Distribution of study sites - quantity

Selected sites in major basins for catchment-wide impact assessment.

Selected basins

Country-based counts of number of top-5 rankings across global mineral commodities. This highlights the concentration of mining in a minority of countries - e.g. China is in the top 5 producers for 50 commodities.

Mining concentration

Reported water quality results in groundwater between various settlements, highlighting water quality exceedences for F and Nitrate.

Borehole vital statistics over time for varying geologies.

Distribution of water use among mine sites, with a focus on the Rustenburg PGM mines

Flow diagram describing the alogorithm for estimation of serviced and unserviced municipal solid waste volumes, combining various datasets.

Results of this analysis for two potential processing sites, cumulating the the effect of road network distance on available volumes. This is contextualised by the graph also showing the extent of thermal processing of waste in various countries.

Number of company reports in various categories analysed for my PhD work, also showing the variation over time and the level of reporting detail.

Proof of concept for potential multi-parameter clustering of mine sites based on a variety of water parameters. The intention is for these kind of clusters to aid in more effective benchmarking against peer groups of similar sites. Silhouette plot helps to identify optimal number of clusters from an information perspective.

A number of datasets were linked to enable the proxy estimation of aboveground biomass from high-resolution vegetation class data and subsequently to assess carbon change due to land cover change.

Influx-outflux plot for the analysis of missing data. This plot assists decision-making for the inclusion of the most meaningful variables from an imputation perspective.

Small study of "hydrogen strategy" documents from various countries/regions (rather out of date now).

Cartographic overlay of relief shading and precipitation to demonstrate orographic and rain shadow effects.

Similar but more detailed view focused on transport, trialling scale-dependent visibility settings.

Distribution map for Plectranthus chimanimanensis, native to Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Proof of concept for a larger project on this group of plants.

Atlas of Uganda

Topographical maps for Guinean towns.

Topographical overview of project site in South Africa.

Excerpt of 1:10 000 atlas of Table Mountain in Cape Town, integrating various datasets, display and styling techniques.
